Join SWE Boston and MathWorks for two hands-on workshops on Artificial Intelligence (AI) - all in one night! This is a great opportunity to learn more about the fast-evolving technology of AI with experts working in the field, and no prior experience is required! Workshops include:
Edge AI with Raspberry Pi - Get started with edge AI! Deep learning is replacing traditional perception and identification algorithms across computer vision, data analytics, speech recognition, and natural language processing. In this workshop, you will develop a deep learning application that detects and classifies objects in an image. You will then deploy and run the application on a Raspberry Pi board.
How to Do AI with Things That Fly - What's your favorite superpower? Ours is making things fly! We will do hands-on exercises using models to simulate a drone and AI to help it learn to fly on its own. Our goal is to get you excited about the engineering challenges and applications of deep learning and AI, and to set you up for success with maker projects and competitions after the event.

About our Speakers
Jaya Shankar
Jaya Shankar is an Engineering Development Manager at MathWorks. She leads the effort to generate efficient code for deep learning applications built with MATLAB and Simulink targeting both CPUs and GPUs. In the past, she has worked on product development for C/C++ code generation and verification with MATLAB and Simulink. She was a founding member of the GPU Coder product which won the 2018 Vision Product in Software and Algorithms Category awarded by the Embedded Vision Alliance Group. Jaya Shankar has presented technical talks at various conferences such as GPU technical conference (GTC) held at Washington DC and Silicon Valley, and the MathWorks Advisory Board meetings.
Louvere Walker-Hannon
Louvere Walker-Hannon has a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and a master’s degree in Geographic Information Technology with a specialization in remote sensing. Louvere was a Program Presenter at the Boston Museum of Science for over five years educating members of the public on STEM topics. Louvere taught engineers and scientists as a Training Engineer for over 15 years with a focus on image processing applications. In Louvere’s current role as an Application Engineer, she assists customers doing image processing, computer vision, machine learning, deep learning, and data analytics. Louvere has been in three technical roles during her tenure at MathWorks over the past 19 years. Her deep understanding of software tools and applications allows her to effectively deliver technical presentations to audiences of diverse backgrounds and experience levels. Louvere presents at many conferences. Louvere volunteers as a STEM Ambassador for MathWorks and for various STEM events.
Penny Anderson
Penny Anderson is a Director of Engineering at MathWorks. She has worked at MathWorks since 1996, where she has had women managers for 20 of those 23 years! She manages teams and projects in the Data Science space including Big Data and Predictive Analytics, as well as core numerical libraries including numerical optimization and partial differential equation solving. Her focus is on providing tools for engineers and scientists to do data science in MATLAB. She works with teams that integrate MATLAB into other platforms and frameworks including open source such as Apache Hadoop, Apache Spark and Apache Kafka. She represents MathWorks at customer and academic conferences, career panels and STEM fairs. She was recently selected to give a motivational talk to the entire MathWorks Development organization, over 2000 people. She has a BSc in Honors Mathematics and an MSc in Computer Science, both from McGill University in Canada.

Dr. Brenda Zhuang is a Software Development Manager at MathWorks, where she leads a team to develop software tools for automatic deployment of embedded applications on microprocessors, ECUs and FPGAs. Brenda joined MathWorks in 2007 as a software developer. Her contributions include key features and enhancements to the Simulink product family. She received her PhD from Boston University in System Engineering developing optimal scheduling approaches in smart sensor networks. She serves on technical program committees for conferences in Control Theory, Modeling and Simulation.
PJ Boardman
As the Director of Education Marketing, MathWorks, PJ Boardman manages a worldwide education marketing team responsible for product strategy, student programs, publishing partnerships, and online learning for both K-12 and higher education. Prior to joining MathWorks, PJ was a VP for Pearson Education and Cengage Learning responsible for teams of product leaders responsible for creating teaching and learning materials across Science, Math, Humanities and Social Sciences. PJ is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Corporate Membership Council. Previous speaking engagements include: Global Engineering Deans Conference (GEDC); World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) Conference 2017, Seoul; ASEE-EDI (American Society for Engineering Education-Engineering Deans Institute) 2019; NECN - STEM Week Interview; Keynote Speaker at MATLAB Expos in Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Bilbao, Madrid and Barcelona. PJ's teams run student competitions and programs around the world.
