Big for a Day
On Saturday June 17, 2017 SWE Boston once again partnered with Big Sister Association of Greater Boston to organize a "Big for a Day" event. These events happen throughout the year to pair unmatched Big and Little Sisters for the day to see if they are a good permanent match. We had 19 Little and Big pairs with girls ages 7-12 join us at the Microsoft NERD Center in Cambridge, as well as Instron and the Boston Society of Civil Engineers. Instron brought materials for the girls to make their own colorful bouncy balls, and BSCES helped the girls build a bridge model and test out a shaker table. SWE's activity was "Tower on a Budget", where girls had a $100 limit on materials to build the tallest tower, such as spaghetti, gumdrops, marshmallows and construction paper. The tallest tower was 31 inches and the winner got to take home a 3D printing pen!
Girls Are Great Engineers!
We are back this year by popular demand from the Little Sisters. The girls really love this event! "Girls Are Great Engineers!" is a 2 hour workshop hosted by SWE Boston to introduce young girls to engineering. This workshop is part of the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston "Big for a Day" program.

At this event, you can expect 30 Big and Little Sister pairs exploring different stations, having fun and learning about engineering principles. The event includes a bridge building station, a kaleidoscope station, and a material science jaw breaker demonstration station by Instron.
We are looking for 10 SWE volunteers to help at the SWE station, sharing your excitement and interest in engineering! We will be facilitating the "Tower on a Budget" activity where girls will "shop" for their materials and try to build the tallest tower.
