The objectives for the Society were adopted when the society was founded in 1950 and are still applicable today:
- Inform young women, their parents, counselors, and the general public, of the qualifications and achievements of women engineers and the opportunities open to them.
- Assist women in readying themselves for a return to active work after temporary retirement.
- Serve as a center of information on women in engineering.
- Encourage women engineers to attain high levels of education and professional achievement.
SWE Boston History
Since its chartering in 1950, the Boston section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE Boston) has grown to one of the largest sections of the Society of Women Engineers. We hold a variety of events throughout the year to support women in engineering and to encourage young women to consider an engineering career.
Our monthly meetings usually feature a speaker who is asked to fill a tall order for SWEBoston: address a topic of interest to women in diverse areas of engineering, at various stages of career advancement, and with different priorities for work/life balance. These programs are sponsored in part by local corporations which support SWE's mission of encouraging women to achieve their full potential in careers as engineers and leaders. Meeting locations vary throughout the greater Boston area including southern New Hampshire and outside of I-495.
SWE Boston provides a variety of avenues for leadership development. With experience at the local level, our members have taken on influential positions on SWE region councils and national committees. Several have even earned the Distinguished New Engineer Award or the SWE Achievement Award, highlighting their accomplishments not only within SWE, but also in the community and the workplace.
SWE Boston regularly plans joint programs with other engineering societies and technology-focused organizations. We also support SWE Student Sections at nine universities in the area and award scholarships to several accomplished women engineering students each year. Our members get involved with middle schools and high schools by judging at Science Fairs, presenting Certificates of Merit for math and science achievement, talking about careers in engineering, and leading hands-on workshops that engage kids in science and technology.
SWE Boston publishes a monthly Newsletter with meeting announcements, member news, paid job advertisements, and articles of interest to the engineering community. The Newsletter is free to members. In addition to monthly meetings, the section hosts a large number of "networking" dinners and lunches throughout the greater Boston area.
