November Meeting: Top Massachusetts Women-Led Businesses & Annual Student Networking Night

So, how are women doing at the helm? Are they really able to survive in the current economic climate? Do they face any challenges that are really different than men? Dr. Nan Langowitz and Dr. I. Elaine Allen from Babson College will present their statistics and research on woman-led businesses in Massachusetts. Learn about women entrepreneurs,the myths and the realities. Enjoy a lively discussion with SWE-Boston and studentsattending this annual networking event.

Our speakers:

Dr. Nan Langowitz is the Director of the Center for Women's Leadership at Babson College and Associate Professor of Management. At the Center for Women's Leadership,
Professor Langowitz directs the Center’s research and educational activities, collaborating with Babson faculty, the business community and partner
organizations.

She is the co-founder of the Center for Women’s Leadership, the first comprehensive center dedicated to advancing women in business and entrepreneurship at a leading
school of management. Her research and teaching is focused on the entrepreneurial leadership of women as well as the challenges and opportunities for organizations seeking to leverage the talent and market power of women. Professor Langowitz is the author of numerous journal articles, research monographs, and cases and has been quoted in leading media outlets such as Business Week,
Christian Science Monitor, Fast Company, and USA Today. She has twenty years of experience in
executive development design and delivery, having worked as a consultant, researcher, and educator with organizations ranging from complex global corporations to new start-up
ventures. As the faculty director for Opting In: Women’s Leadership at Points of
Transition, offered through Babson Executive Education, Professor Langowitz brings her
expertise on women’s leadership and managing change to both organizations and
individuals.

Professor Langowitz earned her doctorate at Harvard Business School and holds an MBA from New York University and a BA from Cornell University. In 2002, she was
awarded the prestigious Abigail Adams Award by the Massachusetts Women's Political
Caucus, for outstanding commitment to the realization of equal political, economic,
and social rights for women. Dr. Langowitz has served on corporate and non-profit boards.

She lives nearby Boston with her husband and three children.

Dr. I. Elaine Allen holds the Kevern R. Joyce Term Chair at Babson College and is Associate Professor of Statistics and Entrepreneurship. Prior to joining
Babson, she founded several companies, and held executive positions in the healthcare and biotechnology industry, including Centocor, ARIAD and MetaWorks, Inc. She
held faculty appointments at the University of Pennsylvania and at Rugers University. Her entrepreneurial activities include starting StatSystems, a medical
device company; ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, a publicly held biotechnology company; Pondview Associates, consulting and research firm studying entrepreneurship and family
business. She continues to consult in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry
and serves on several NIH panels on best practices and evidence-based outcomes research.

Dr. Allen has published widely in statistical, clinical, and managed care journals on statistical issues in meta-analysis, data mining, clinical and biological research methodology and statistical computing.

Directions

From the North:
If you are approaching on Routes 1, 95, 128 or 93, take Route 93 south to Exit 32, Medford Square. From the exit ramp, take the first right off the traffic
circle, which is Route 60 west. At the second set of lights, bear left on Main Street and take an immediate right on to Route 16 west.

*Continue on Route 16 for approximately one and a quarter miles. Bear left through the next traffic circle and proceed up the
hill on Powder House Boulevard. At the third traffic light turn left onto Packard Avenue.

You are now on the Tufts campus. Proceed to the top of the hill and take the fourth
right onto North Hill Road. Follow North Hill Road to the end and turn left into the parking garage which is located in Dowling Hall.

From the Northwest:
If you are approaching on Route 2 East, continue on Route 2,
past the junction of Routes 2 and 95. If you are approaching on Route 3,
take Route 95 south to Route 2 east (Exit 29A). At the junction of Routes 2
and 16, bear left through a full traffic light on Route 16 east.

**Take Route 16 east through two full traffic lights. You will see blue
signs on the right for Tufts University. Follow the blue signs and take a sharp right up
the hill on Powder House Boulevard. At the third traffic light turn left onto Packard Avenue.

You are now on the Tufts campus. Proceed to the top of the hill and take the
fourth right onto North Hill Road. Follow North Hill Road to the end and turn
left into the parking garage which is located in Dowling Hall.

From the West or Southwest:
If you are approaching on Routes 90 (Massachusetts Turnpike) or 95 take Route 95
north to Route 2 east (Exit 29A). At the junction of Routes 2 and 16, bear left through
a full traffic light on Route 16 east and refer to directions in the
preceding paragraph.**

From the South or Boston:
If you are coming from the south, take Route 3 north to Route 93 north.
If coming from Boston, take Route 93 north. If coming from the airport,
follow signs to Route 93 via the Sumner Tunnel. Take Route 93 north to Exit 31. Follow the exit ramp to Route 16 west and refer to directions in the first paragraph.*

From the MBTA:
If you are coming by subway, or “T”, take the Red Line to the Davis Square Station.
Exit the Davis Square Station on the College Avenue side. You may take the #94 or #96 bus or
walk 15 minutes along College Avenue to the Tufts campus. If you board the bus, ask the driver to stop across from the Memorial Steps at Tufts University, just before the
intersection of College and Boston Avenues. If you walk, turn right out of the subway station
and follow College Avenue to the Powderhouse Square traffic circle.

Cross College Avenue here, then continue on College Avenue across Broadway and
Powderhouse Boulevard. The Tufts Campus will be on your left. Continue on College Avenue,
passing Lower Campus Road, Talbot Avenue, take a left on Professors Row.
Then take a right on Packard Ave. Carmichael Hall is 200 Packard Ave.
