SWE Boston 2017 Region F Travel Award Recipients-
Ellie Sanford & Riya Thakkar
In recognition of their outstanding contributions to SWE Boston outreach, membership initiatives, and support of collegiates-- Ellie Sanford & Riya Thakkar each received a trip to the Region F Conference at UConn.
Here are some quotes from their experiences. Ellie says, I went to 4 sessions that each gave me great advice, insight and skills relevant to my career and life in general. I learned how to respond to and try to combat subtle sexism, how to deal with conflicts among co-workers or employees, how to influence others and advocate for my own ideas, and how to become a leader whose employees do good work not because they have to but because they want to. Each of these sessions was very informative and also fun! I learned a ton of things that are relevant to my work life since I recently became a supervisor. I also appreciated that each session was run by a current or former female engineer, because that is a unique perspective that not many people understand! Oh and the food was super yummy :)
Riya's top 5 comments are listed below:
1. It is necessary to understand the importance of having your "tribe" at workplace and in social life. The people who support, trust and respect you.
2. Top 4 traits employers are looking for in their next hire are:
-Bright
-Respectful
-Collaborative
-Driven
3. Everybody has a story. Story that sinks their heart. What is 'yours'?
4. Only you can change "YOU"
5.To succeed in corporate world you have to be able to emphasize benefit of what you did in making the business.
SWE Boston is glad such deserving members had a great trip to conference and looks forward to offering this opportunity again next year!
